Indonesian pencak silat coach throws tantrum at SEA Games loss


A pencak silat coach from Indonesia threw a board into the match as one his players lost to a Malaysian rival at the 32nd Sea Games Wednesday.

Kadek Andrey, the Indonesian player, dominated the game from the start and was leading by 28-19 points at one point. But his Malaysian opponent, Muhammad Marzuki, managed to catch up with a long series of strong punches. One of them forced Andrey to seek medical assistance.

When Marzuki was leading 36-33, Andrey’s coach began shouting before be picked up the 2-meter-long “coach” board around and threw it into the match.

The match, at the Chroy Changvar Convention Center in Phnom Penh, Cambodia, had to be halted when a female referee began screaming at the coach and pushing him. After the melee, another referee gave the coach a red card and had him removed from the room.

Marzuki continued to score in the 19 remaining seconds of the match to win 39-33 and earn the gold medal, with Andrey getting the silver. The two hugged after the fight, before Marzuki held Andrey’s hand and raised it up high, to show his respect for the opponent.
