Nguyen Thuy Linh, the number one female badminton player in Vietnam, has entered the top 40 of world rankings for the first time in her career.
The milestone came after Linh finished second at the Thailand International Challenge on March 12. She got 3,400 points to rise from 45th to 40th in the world ranking and to 30th in Asia, her career high.
Linh nearly cracked the top 40 in July 2019 when she peaked at 41st.
The highest position in world rankings that a Vietnamese female player achieved is 34th, established by Vu Thi Trang in June 2017. At the moment, the 30-year-old is placing 115th.
Both Linh and Trang are competing at the Vietnam International Challenge in Hanoi from March 21 to 26. Linh, the second seed, plays Taiwanese player Wang Yu-si in the opening match while Trang faces the number one seed, South Korea’s Sim Yu-jin.
Linh, 25, started playing badminton when she was 10. During her career, she has played 254 games, with a winning rate of 61%. She has won nine major titles so far, including the 2018 and 2019 Bangladesh International, the 2022 Belgium International and the 2022 Vietnam Open.
