Low-cost carrier Vietjet on Wednesday announced the opening of the first direct air route connecting Vietnam and Kazakhstan.
From Oct. 25, there would be two weekly flights from Nha Trang, a popular beach resort town in central Vietnam, to Kazakhstan’s biggest city Almaty every Tuesday and Saturday.
This would be the first direct air route between both countries, said Chu Viet Cuong, deputy general director of Vietjet.
Earlier, tourists and businessmen from Vietnam to Kazakhstan often had to transit several times in Thailand and India.
Cuong said the new route would facilitate the development of bilateral trade and tourism activities between the two countries.
In 2020, trade turnover between the two countries reached $380.8 million.
Round-trip airfares of the direct route will cost VND19 million ($789) per person.
Vietnam reopened its borders in mid-March after two years of closures.
Vietnam has yet to waive visa requirements for Kazakh visitors while Kazakhstan offers visa exemptions for Vietnamese tourists.
