Police propose removal of HCMC downtown roundabout

Traffic police have proposed that the Nguyen Binh Khiem–Dien Bien Phu roundabout in HCMC’s downtown District 1 be turned into an intersection with traffic lights.

In a statement sent recently to the Ho Chi Minh City Department of Transport, the city’s traffic police said the proposal seeks to resolve the traffic congestion that has become more serious at the roundabout.

The circle is where two major streets, Dien Bien Phu and Nguyen Binh Khiem, collide to connect the city’s eastern gateway with the downtown area.

Built 20 years ago, the roundabout is 60 meters in diameter with a clock tower in the middle. It is just meters away from intersections with Hoang Sa Street along the Nhieu Loc-Thi Nghe Canal, and Dinh Tien Hoang Street.

According to the traffic police, the roundabout these days has been attracting a large number of vehicles, especially during peak hours in the morning and the afternoon, creating serious traffic chaos.

Therefore, the police proposed establishing traffic lights in the area and removing the roundabout to ensure traffic safety and order.

The Transport Department will study the plan and make a decision later.
