Driver fined for ripping off Japanese tourists in Hanoi

A car driver has been fined for charging a group of five Japanese tourists VND1 million (US$42) for a one-km trip in Hanoi.

Police at the airport tracked down the driver on Sunday after the airport security center received an email the previous day from a family of Japanese who said they were charged VND1 million for a one km ride from the international terminal to the domestic terminal of Noi Bai airport.

The driver was fined by the police, but it was not revealed how much he will have to pay.

A one-kilometer taxi drive in Vietnam costs less than $1.

The family from Tokyo landed at Noi Bai on Friday afternoon. They had to move to the domestic terminal to take a flight to Cam Ranh airport on Vietnam’s central coast.

Camera footage tracked down the driver, a 40-year-old man from Soc Son District, who works as a freelance driver.

The man was required to return the VND1 million, which will be returned to the Japanese tourists when they come back to Noi Bai on Tuesday.

The Noi Bai security center last week tracked down a taxi driver who charged an Indian couple VND2.7 million while the meter said VND270,000. The driver has returned the extra money to the tourists.
