Jobs dry up in last quarter of 2022: report

The demand for new workers in textiles and construction and for marketing and sales jobs dropped by more than 50% in the fourth quarter, Navigos Group said.

A recent report by the recruitment firm said as against the same period in 2019, the year before the Covid pandemic began, demand was down 25%.

The textile and clothing and leather and footwear industries recorded the sharpest decrease, 58%.

Others to see a decrease of more than 50% included construction at 55%, purchasing, supply and material transport at 53%, and sales and marketing at 50%.

Navigos pointed to the fall in export demand, surge in prices of fuel and raw materials, Vietnamese currency’s devaluation against the dollar, and geopolitical instability as the reasons for the shortage of jobs.

Sectors like banking, consumer goods, insurance, and securities saw demand fall by 13-45%.

The General Statistics Office reported last week a slowdown in industrial production in the fourth quarter.

It said the index of industrial production increased by just 3% for the quarter, the lowest in a year.

Speaking at the Vietnam Economic Forum in Hanoi recently Deputy Minister of Labor, War Invalids and Social Affairs Le Van Thanh warned the labor market should expect more difficulties in 2023.
