Air Canada passenger opens emergency door aircraft on London flight

An elderly man boarding an Air Canada flight from London to Toronto tried to open the aircraft doors midflight, before the plane managed to land safely.

The incident happened on a Boeing 787-9 aircraft flying from Heathrow to Toronto on Jan. 21, Global News reported.

The passenger was restrained by Air Canada employees during the flight as part of their flight and safety protocols.

As the plane landed, officers entered the aircraft and found the passenger “had been in a state of crisis and confusion,” Toronto News reported.

Police said no criminal charges were made against him as his actions seemed unintentional.

According to the airline, it’s not possible to open aircraft doors at high altitudes as modern aircraft are equipped with plug doors, which make use of cabin pressurization to stay sealed.

The higher pressure on one side forces the door into its socket and seals it shut until the pressure is released.

Last month, a passenger on an Air Canada flight reportedly opened a cabin door shortly after boarding a flight bound for Dubai at Toronto Pearson International Airport, leading to its fall onto the tarmac below.
