Police in Quang Nam Province in central Vietnam have arrested two women for putting a third woman on fire on a street.
Nguyen Thi Diem Phuong, 23, and her mother-in-law, Dang Thi Thong Nhat, 44, have been arrested after police identified the two as having put a 28-year-old woman on fire. The victim has not been identified.
On January 26, social media users shared a video of the incident, which took place in broad daylight on a street in Duy Xuyen District.
As seen in the video, two people attack the woman in a residential area before one of them pours gasoline over her and sets her on fire. The victim is seen burning in the video. It took around 20 seconds for others to put the fire out.
The unconscious woman was rushed to a local hospital for emergency care by onlookers.
Major General Nguyen Duc Dung, director of Quang Nam Police Department, said the reason for the violence was “romantic jealousy.”
Captain Nguyen Ha Lai, the department’s deputy director, said Phuong believed that her husband was having an affair with the 28-year-old woman in Da Nang, which borders Quang Nam.
On the morning of January 26, Phuong caught her husband carrying a woman out of a karaoke bar on his back so she and her mother-in-law rushed over and began to beat the woman. Phuong then poured 1.5 liters of gasoline all over the woman and set her on fire.
The woman is under treatment at Da Nang General Hospital.
