Vietnamese top cyclist sweeps second stage of Thailand race

Vietnam’s number one cyclist Nguyen Thi That won all the prizes in the second stage of cycling race Tour of Thailand on Sunday.

After finishing second in the first stage, That competed in the 82.2 km race in the second stage with impressive wins and was always in the lead.

At sprint 1, she easily beat South Korea’s Kang Hyunkyung and Na Ahreum to finish first. After the first sprint, cyclists entered a climb on the pass. That’s teammate supported her well and she finished first at the top of the pass and once again beat Ahreum to win the Red Jersey for the best climber.

At sprint 2, That once again showed her domination when she beat Taiwan’s Huang Ting Ying to accumulate more points for the Blue Jersey.

After 1 hour and 59 minutes, the cyclists headed toward the finish line. That maintained a consistent form to get past Thailand’s Maneephan Jutatip and won the stage. Ahreum finished third.

“It’s really hot today. The road was also challenging so I’m really happy with this win,” That said after the race.

“Julatip is a strong opponent and I’m glad that I beat her. I want to thank my teammates for supporting me today.”

With her impressive performances, That won the Yellow, Blue, Red and Purple Jersey in the second stage.

The Princess Maha Chakri Sirindhorns Cup Women’s Tour of Thailand, commonly known as Tour of Thailand, is a professional cycling race in the competition system of the 2023 UCI (International Cycling Union) Asian Tour. The race takes place from April 8 to 10 with three stages of 70 km, 82.2 km and 89 km respectively and with relatively flat terrain and a few slopes. Besides Vietnam and two teams from host Thailand, the race has five other teams representing Malaysia, Singapore, Indonesia, South Korea, Taiwan and four clubs.

The Vietnam women’s bicycle team is led by coach Dang Trung Hieu with five cyclists.

This is considered an important preparation for the team ahead of SEA Games 32 in Cambodia next month.
