Vietnam to face Japan at U17 Asian Cup


A draw on Thursday placed Vietnam into group D with the defending champion Japan, India, and Uzbekistan at the 2023 U17 Asian Cup.

Before the draw, Vietnam were placed among the third seeds with Malaysia, Afghanistan and Saudi Arabia. The first seeds are hosts Thailand, Japan, Tajikistan and South Korea. The second seeds are Australia, India, Iran, Yemen and in the fourth seeds are China, Qatar, Uzbekistan, and Laos.

Japan will be Vietnam’s toughest challenge in group D, but India and Uzbekistan are not easy opponents either.

Hosts Thailand are in an easier group with Laos, Malaysia and Yemen.

The 2023 U17 Asian Cup is set to take place from June 15 to July 2. The four teams that advance to the semifinals will qualify for the 2023 U17 World Cup in October.

Vietnam qualified for the U17 Asian Cup with coach Nguyen Quoc Tuan, after they won all three games at the qualifiers against Taiwan, Nepal and Thailand. After that, Tuan has become the coach of V. League club Becamex Binh Duong and coach Hoang Anh Tuan will take over the team for the upcoming tournament.
