Vietnam mountainside erosion buries homestay facility, kills owner

A woman was killed while her husband and child injured as a mountainside crumbled and buried their homestay facility in northern Vietnam Saturday.

The landslide occurred around 4 a.m. when a mountain over 100 meters above Provincial Road 112 in Ta Xua Commune of Son La Province’s Bac Yen District began to erode. Rocks and debris cascaded down, burying the tourist homestay. The owner of the homestay was killed instantly, while her husband and child sustained injuries.

The landslide also blocked the road surface and caused extensive damage to the homestay’s walls, roofs and structures. Another nearby homestay also suffered damage.

Local authorities reported that the affected homestay did not have any guests at the time of the incident; only the owner’s family was present. The area experienced light rain on Friday night, following days of heavy rainfall.

Several homestay facilities line the mountainsides of Ta Xua, which is a popular high-altitude tourist destination known for its scenic cloud seas.
