In the last game of the 2022 U23 Dubai Cup on Tuesday, Vietnam lost 0-1 to Uzbekistan.
Vietnam’s defense in the game was still as solid as in the 0-0 draw against Iraq and 0-1 loss against Croatia. They only conceded from a superb freekick of Jasurbek Jaloliddinov in the 57th minute.
This was also one of the rare chances that Uzbekistan created in the game. However, Uzbekistan still proved to be one step ahead of Vietnam in terms of gameplay. Their experienced players knew when to commit a tactical foul to prevent dangerous attacks of Vietnam.
In the opposite direction, playing with a five-man midfield, Vietnam had a fair dispute in the middle. But Vietnam’s ability to bring the ball inside the box was still limited. In the first half, Vietnam’s two shots were all from outside the penalty area and didn’t cause any trouble for Uzbekistan.
Vietnam head coach Lee Young-jin made early substitutions in the second half with four new players to enhance the attacking line. However, the connection wasn’t there. Vietnam tried to find an equalizer using crosses from the two flanks but it was also ineffective.
In the last 10 minutes, Vietnam had good chances to score, including two freekicks at a good position, but both of the shots sent the ball wide.
The Dubai Cup features 10 teams, all U23, with China, Japan, Qatar, Saudi Arabia, Thailand, the UAE, and Uzbekistan being the others. The tournament is held from March 23 to 29.
This is also Vietnam’s last match at the U23 Dubai Cup. The team left the tournament with two defeats and a draw, conceded twice and failed to score. Coach Lee certainly will have many things to do with the U23 team before the SEA Games 31 which will take place in May.
