Vietnam end Dubai Cup with Uzbekistan loss

Vietnam lost 0-1 to Uzbekistan in their final match of the U23 Dubai Cup Tuesday.

Vietnam’s defense held up as well as it did in the 0-0 draw against Iraq and 0-1 loss to Croatia, and only conceded a goal off a superb freekick by Jasurbek Jaloliddinov in the 57th minute.

It was one of the few chances that Uzbekistan created in the game though they outmatched Vietnam in terms of skills.

Their players were more experienced, and knew when to commit a tactical foul to nip off dangerous attacks by Vietnam.

Playing with a five-man midfield, Vietnam had a fair share of possession in the middle, but were not able to take the ball inside the box.

Both of Vietnam’s shots in the first half were from outside the penalty area, and did not cause any trouble for Uzbekistan.

Vietnam head coach Lee Young-jin made early substitutions in the second half with four new players to strengthen the attack. However, they did not cooperate well. Vietnam tried to find the goal using crosses from both flanks, but it did not work.

In the last 10 minutes Vietnam had good chances to score, including from two freekicks in good positions, but both times the ball went wide.

The Dubai Cup featured 10 teams, all U23, with China, Japan, Qatar, Saudi Arabia, Thailand, and the UAE being the others. It was played from March 23 to 29.

Vietnam finished with two defeats and a draw.
