Vietnam draw a success, says Philippines coach

Philippines head coach Norman Fegidero was happy with how his team played to hold Vietnam to a 0-0 draw in their second game of SEA Games 31 Sunday night.

After beating Timor Leste 4-0 in their first game, Fegidero said he would adjust the strategy to beat Vietnam. Although the Philippines didn’t win, they forced Vietnam to share points in Viet Tri Stadium in the northern province of Phu Tho.

“Vietnam are the defending gold medalists and the number one contenders in this SEA Games, so drawing against them was a huge success for us,” Fegidero said at the post-game press conference.

The Philippines were under great pressure from Vietnam most of the time during the game. But they deliberately created multiple layers of defense and kept their composure against Vietnam’s offense.

“After doing research on Vietnam’s playing style, we prepared a defensive approach for this game. Of course, my players also had to try their best to lock down the lethal attackers of the host. The rain also supported our playing style,” Fegidero said.

With one point in this game, the Philippines are leading group A on goal difference. Both Vietnam and the Philippines have four points from two games, but the latter scored more goals.

“Our target is to advance to the semifinals, so this result and the current position will give our confidence a boost. We will rest a bit then focus on beating Myanmar in the next game,” Fegidero said.
