Tourist dies after bungee jump at Macau Tower

A Japanese tourist was confirmed dead just hours after completing a bungee jump at Macau Tower last Sunday.

The unnamed tourist began experiencing shortness of breath shortly after taking the 764 feet plunge from the tower at around 4:30 p.m. on Sunday, HK1 news site reported.

He was taken to the Conde S. Januario Hospital for emergency treatment but was later pronounced dead.

An investigation into the incident is ongoing.

Customers are advised to disclose any relevant medical conditions before taking part in the bungee jump, according to the website of Skypark by AJ Hackett, the company that runs activities at the tower, Strait Times reported.

Disclosable conditions include heart conditions, high blood pressure, diabetes and past surgeries.

The tower itself is 338 meters high, but the bungee platform is 233 meters from the ground, known as the world’s highest.

In 2018, a Russian tourist was left dangling 180 feet in the air after completing a bungee jump from the same tower. The operator at the time attributed the mishap to a backup safety system that switched on because of cold temperatures.
