Storm Nesat to weaken into tropical depression before entering Vietnam

Storm Nesat was packing 117 kph winds to the north of the Paracel Islands at 4 a.m. Wednesday and is forecast to keep weakening as it gets closer to central Vietnam.

The National Center for Hydrometeorological Forecasting said the storm will move southwest at 10-15 kph on Wednesday.

It will be around 120 km from Vietnam’s central coast from Quang Binh and Thua Thien Hue Provinces at 4 a.m. Thursday, when it will meet a strong cold spell to weaken to 74 kph winds.

The storm will move a bit north afterwards and weaken into a tropical depression before entering provinces from Thanh Hoa to Quang Binh on Friday morning, carrying winds of around 50 kph.

The Japan Meteorological Agency said the storm will weaken to around 65 kph winds on Thursday.

Waves of up to five meters are forecast in the Gulf of Tonkin and along the central coast in the next two days.

Storm Nesat is the third storm formed in the Vietnamese waters in the past three weeks. The most recent one, Son Ca, caused severe floodings that left 10 people dead in central Vietnam and damaged tens of thousands of houses in Da Nang and Thua Thien Hue Provinces.
