SEA Games: Vietnam break medal record


A muay gold medal on Sunday afternoon helped Vietnam break the SEA Games gold medal record of 194 set by Indonesia in 1997.

Bui Yen Ly won the muay gold by beating Thailand’s Ruchira Wongsriwo in the women’s 54kg final.

Earlier, tennis ace Ly Hoang Nam defended his gold medal after beating Trinh Linh Giang, also from Vietnam, in the final.

Vietnam also won two gold medals in aerobic gymnastics, in mix pair and group events.

On Sunday, there will be 61 sets of medals, of which boxing has the most with 13. Men’s football is the most anticipated event as Vietnam will play Thailand in the final at My Dinh National Stadium in Hanoi.

In the morning, Vietnam won two cycling gold, in the women’s individual and women’s team events.

Outstanding athlete

The Games’ technical team has nominated four for the outstanding athlete title. They are Vietnam’s swimmer Nguyen Huy Hoang, Vietnam’s runner Nguyen Thi Oanh, Singapore’s swimmer Jing Wen Quah and Thailand’s runner Joshua Robert Atkinson.
