PM requests more state workers for HCMC

Chairing a meeting in HCMC, Chinh said the Ministry of Home Affairs must either add more civil servants to the city’s payroll or raise salaries for current state workers given the large workload compared to those in other localities.

A civil servant in the city, Vietnam’s biggest, currently serves 346 residents on average compared to the national level of 152.

The average population of a district in HCMC is 239,000 higher than the national level.

According to a government decree issued in 2019, HCMC had to cut 2,299 state workers in wards and communes from its payroll to streamline the system.

The city has more than once proposed the Home Affairs Ministry issues a special policy for the city on civil servants, but all proposals have been turned down. The ministry has said that population was just one of the criteria to classify a locality as a ward or commune and therefore, the city does not have the basis to increase the number of state workers at that level.
