Low demand sees flights to Phu Quoc suspended

Many flights to Phu Quoc Island from Da Nang, Can Tho and Nha Trang have been suspended due to low demand amid a brewing tourism crisis.

A number of international flights have also been stopped though services from South Korea, Malaysia, Thailand, Hong Kong, Shanghai, Kazakhstan, and the Czech Republic continue, bringing around 1,700 passengers a day.

Once a top tourist attraction, Phu Quoc has been suffering from a crisis in recent months as tourists voted with their feet due to soaring airfares, exorbitant hotel and other prices and scams.

The number of domestic tourists to Phu Quoc has halved in the last three months.

Hotels on the island said 50% of their rooms are unbooked for the upcoming Christmas and New Year holidays.

Last month tourism authorities on Phu Quoc vowed to improve the quality of services and prevent price gouging to revive its reputation.
