Northern Vietnam temperatures drop to zero degrees


Temperatures in the north of Vietnam droped as low as 0 degree Celsius on Monday morning, with Hanoi recording temperatures of 13 degrees.

Nine northern Vietnam localities saw temperatures dropping below 10 degrees, with the peaks of Mau Son Mountain in Lang Son dropping to 0 degrees, while other areas in Ha Giang, Vinh Phuc, Lao Cai, Lai Chau, Bac Kan, Cao Bang and Dien Bien Provinces recorded temperatures of between 2-9 degrees, according to the National Center for Hydro-Meteorological Forecasting.

In Hanoi, temperatures were recorded at around 12-13 degrees, a drop of 5-7 degrees from Sunday.

As a mass of cold air keeps exerting its effect on the region, the cold is expected to expand its reach. The cold front, with average daytime temperatures below 15 degrees, should last until January 18 in northern Vietnam and the northern parts of central Vietnam. Mountainous regions may see ice and frost.

During the ongoing cold period, the lowest temperatures in northern Vietnam will be around 9-12 degrees, with temperatures in mountainous areas expected to fall below 3 degrees. The northern parts of central Vietnam should see temperatures at 11-14 degrees, while areas from Quang Binh to Thua Thien-Hue may see temperatures at 14-17 degrees.

By January 19, temperatures sould gradually rise in the region, the center forecasted.
