Netflix to remove ad-free Basic plan

Netflix is set to remove its ad-free Basic plan, which costs $11.99 a month, opting users to choose between the $6.99 plan with ads or other more expensive options.

The company informed its shareholders recently that the plan with ads accounts for 40% of all sign-ups in its ads market.

Netflix therefore plans to retire the Basic plan in select countries, starting with Canada and the U.K., during the second quarter.

In June last year, Netflix stopped accepting new subscriptions for its Basic plan but allowed existing subscribers to continue.

With the upcoming removal of the $11.99 plan, customers can opt for the $15.49 Standard plan or the $6.99 plan, which includes approximately four minutes of ads per one hour of streaming.

The ad-supported plan was introduced in November 2022 and has gained 23 million subscribers, about 9% of Netflix’s total customer base.

The company ended last year with 260 million subscribers and a revenue increase of 12.5% to $8.83 billion.

In Vietnam, Netflix offers four plans, priced from VND70,000 ($2.84) to VND260,000 per month.
