Maintenance worker dies in Formosa power plant’s pipe explosion

One worker died and two others were injured in an explosion while doing pipe maintenance work at a thermal power plant run by Taiwan-invested Formosa in central Vietnam.

The accident happened at noon Saturday in Ky Anh Commune, Ha Tinh Province, a company spokesperson said. Ha Tinh police are investigating. Local reports say that the workers were doing welding work when the pipe exploded.

The three victims were taken to the Ky Anh General Hospital by 2 p.m. but one of them had already died.

“The two remaining victims had burns on their chest and face. They have been treated and are now in stable condition. But it is unclear when they can be discharged,” a hospital spokesperson said Sunday morning.

The dead worker was from Nghe An Province and the injured two are from Quang Binh and Ha Tinh Provinces, all in central Vietnam. Their identities have not been released. They were working for a subcontractor who is also based in Ky Anh. The company specializes in construction and maintaining mechanical devises.

In August last year three workers died due to a lack of oxygen at Formosa’s steel fabricator.
