TEL AVIV — The Vietnamese Embassy in Israel, in collaboration with the Israel – Việt Nam Friendship Association and the Open University of Israel, on July 21 organised an online talk on the 70th anniversary of the Geneva Agreement on the Cessation of Hostilities in Việt Nam (July 21, 1954 – 2024), the 70th anniversary of the Điện Biên Phủ Victory (May 7, 1954 – 2024), and the 31 years since the establishment of Việt Nam – Israel diplomatic relations (July 12, 1993 – 2024).

More than 500 students majoring in international relations and other research branches watched documentaries about Việt Nam’s resounding Điện Biên Phủ Victory, which helped lead to the collapse of the French colonial rule around the world.

In particular, on July 21, 1954, France had to sign the Geneva Accords on ending the war and restoring peace in Indochina, which abolished the rule of France and recognised national independence of Việt Nam, Laos, and Cambodia.

At the event, ambassador Lý Đức Trung highlighted Việt Nam’s socio-economic achievements after nearly 40 years of implementing the đổi mới (renewal) policy. Under the leadership of the Communist Party of Việt Nam, the country transformed from a war-torn nation to an attractive destination for foreign investors and tourists.

Trung also noted similarities between the peoples of Việt Nam and Israel, adding Việt Nam is interested in Israel’s knowledge and technology strengths, especially agricultural technologies, and wishes to further promote bilateral cooperation in these fields. — VNA/VNS
