Hue spends $4 mln to open new pedestrian street

Authorities in popular tourist town Hue have spent VND97 billion ($4 million) to renovate an 850-meter-long street into a new pedestrian zone in a hope to enrich its nightlife.

On Oct. 12, workers pruned trees along Hai Ba Trung Street in Vinh Ninh Ward, which is poised to become the fourth pedestrian street in Hue.

Sidewalks along both sides of the street were also upgraded with new drainage, electricity and lighting systems.

The new pedestrian zone will be paved with stone and has green trees planted along both sides.

Local authorities would install surveillance camera and arrange public utility services in what they hope to boost nighttime travel experience for tourists.

Last April, Hue launched its third pedestrian zone around the iconic Imperial Citadel after Nguyen Dinh Chieu Street along Huong (Perfume) River and the backpacker precinct at the intersection of Vo Thi Sau, Chu Van An, and Pham Ngu Lao streets.

Hue was the seat of the Nguyen Dynasty from 1802 until the end of feudalism in Vietnam in 1945. The UNESCO-recognized Imperial Citadel is now a popular attraction.

The town is generally considered sleepy with little nightlife to speak of and just a few bars and cafes.
