After the Tet holiday, many factories in HCMC have boosted recruitment efforts to make up for the shortage of staff as orders have recovered.
Tai Viet Camping Products Industries Co. in the Tan Thuan Export Processing Zone in District 7 is recruiting 100 laborers to increase its staff to 700.
Newcomers are offered a basic salary of VND5.2 million (US$220) per month in addition to allowances to support their children.
Tran Thi Thu Tham, who is in charge of human resources at Tai Viet, said the firm’s parent company in Taiwan has several big clients and therefore its orders have always been stable, allowing it to schedule production for up to two years in advance.
Also in District 7, Furukawa Automotive Parts Vietnam Inc. (FAPV) which is specialized in assembling car wires, will have to recruit 200 more female workers to expand its production and at the same time, make up for workers who resigned before the Lunar New Year holiday.
The company guarantees an income of VND8-10 million per month for new laborers.
Nguyen Thanh Cao, who works at Lam Thinh Phat Labor Supply Co., said that in the fourth quarter last year, only two factories at Tan Thuan EPZ had enough demand to employ 150 new workers. Now, six factories are recruiting 3,000 new staff.
“Most companies only require candidates to have good health and and to be in the working age,” said Cao.
However, he said many are only hiring for seasonal jobs as their orders have yet to fully recover.
Nguyen Thi Thuy, vice president of the Vietnam Textile and Garment Trade Union, said companies in the sector are short 5,000-7,500 laborers and so must recruit to make up for that shortfall.
A survey by HCMC’s Department of Labor, Invalids and Social Affairs said that after Tet, nearly 500 companies need to recruit a total of more than 14,300 workers.
Most of the jobs are in the fields of apparel, footwear, electronics, and chemicals and plastics. In the first quarter of this year, it is expected that companies in the city will need to employ 79,000 – 87,000 people.
