Da Lat expansion to absorb neighboring districts

Da Lat Town, a tourist attraction in Vietnam’s Central Highlands, will be expanded by merging it with four neighboring districts.

A plan approved recently by Prime Minister Pham Minh Chinh aims for Da Lat to encompass a total area of 335,000 hectares by 2045. The resort town and former hill station is currently 39,400 hectares large.

Da Lat will soon encompass the Lac Duong, Don Duong, Duc Trong and Lam Ha districts to the north, south, east and west. All four districts are currently home to vast spaces of forest land.

According to the plan, the existing town of Da Lat will be the center of six “satellite towns.” Each town will have a different function to serve the demands of agriculture development, nature conservation, eco-tourism, shopping, and entertainment.

Da Lat will then be the new regions’ administrative center, focusing on high-end resorts and architectural heritage preservation.

Da Lat in Lam Dong Province was formed 130 years ago after French doctor Alexandre Yersin set foot on the Lam Vien plateau. In the early 20th century, the French colony used the town as a retreat from the heat of the lowlands. As a result, the town has a distinctly European feel, with French colonial architecture left relatively untouched.

The town is located at an altitude of 1,500 meters above sea level, and its pleasant weather, cool air, and natural beauty make it a popular tourist destination for both domestic and international travelers.
