A new bridge will open in 2025 to link Can Gio and Nha Be districts as the existing ferry system is overloaded.
A study by the municipal Department of Transport reported the Can Gio Bridge will cost VND10 trillion (US$420.6 million), and will be implemented under the build-operate-transfer or build-transfer formats.
If the city does not find suitable investors, the bridge will be built using city funds, said department director Tran Quang Lam at a city meeting on Tuesday.
The city’s government has tasked the department with preparing investment procedures and completing a pre-feasibility study report for the bridge, which will cross the Soai Rap River.

“The department has finished studying the building technique for the bridge and is at the step of reviewing affected families for site clearance. A complete plan on investment procedures will be submitted to city legislators late this month so that work can start on the project in April 2025.”
According to the Director of the Department of Transport, Can Gio is a locality with many advantages for green transport and tourism yet its infrastructure remains limited.
For the locality to develop, infrastructure must be prioritized, according to the department.
The Ministry of Transport added Can Gio Bridge to the HCMC traffic infrastructure development plan seven years ago.
According to that plan, the bridge will run 3.4 km long and have four lanes to replace Binh Khanh ferry.
