Boeing to expand manufacturing in Vietnam

American aviation giant Boeing plans to increase its investment in Vietnam for making aircraft parts and equipment.

Steve Biegun, its senior vice president for global public policy, discussed the plan with Vietnamese Minister of Industry and Trade Nguyen Hong Dien on the sidelines of the Indo-Pacific Economic Framework on May 26.

There are both Vietnamese and foreign companies making parts for the company in Vietnam, but the former mostly make low-value items.

The foreign suppliers are mostly from the U.S., Japan and South Korea.

Dien called on Boeing to speed up training and technology transfer in Vietnam.

Vietnam has mechanical manufacturers who are potential partners for Boeing, and his ministry would provide support for them to link up, he assured.

Boeing has been in Vietnam since 1995, and contributed to the local industry by providing technical assistance for defense and commercial aviation and assisting Vietnam Airlines in getting a license to fly non-stop from Ho Chi Minh City to U.S. city San Francisco.
