Australian teen dies after inhaling solvents in TikTok trend

A 13-year-old girl in Melbourne, Australia, has died after huffing solvents in a popularTikTok trend known as “chroming,” which involves inhaling chemicals to experience a quick high.

According to Strait Times, the Australian teenager Esra Haynes went into cardiac arrest after participating in the “chroming” trend during a sleepover on March 31.

People trying the dangerous trend often inhale substances including metallic paints, solvents, petrol, and chemicals from aerosol cans.

It is reported that Haynes used a deodorant can.

The girl was on life support for eight days before doctors told her family “her brain was damaged beyond repair,” leaving her relatives to decide to turn off the machine.

Haynes’ family are attempting to raise awareness about the risks of inhaling solvents, hoping to warn children and teenagers not to make their daughter’s mistake.

“We want to help other children not fall into the silly trap of doing this silly thing. It’s unquestionable that this will be our crusade,” Haynes’ father told the Herald Sun.

This is not the first incident caused by the trend in Australia. Since 2019, two 16-year-old boys have reportedly died. and another teenage girl has been reported as having suffered brain damage after inhaling toxic substances.
