Three teams from Thailand and Malaysia have withdrawn from 2022 Biwase Cup, hosted in southern province Binh Duong this March due to Covid-19 cases.
The national cycling team of Thailand and Malaysia, along with Thai cycling club Fisherman’s Friends had initially registered for the tournament. The teams were supposed to arrive in Vietnam on Wednesday. However, they have requested to withdraw after members contracted Covid-19.
Thailand were also going to bring Phetdarin Somrat, the champion of 2020 Biwase Cup to this year’s event.
Without foreign teams, the title race this year promises to still be entertaining, especially with Binh Duong, the host of the tournament, having invested heavily in the squad with the addition of two Japanese cyclists Shoko Kashiki (winner of 2019 Biwase Cup) and Miyoko Karami (winner in 2017).
The 12th edition of Biwase Cup will take place between March 4 to 13. Athletes will compete in 10 stages, cycling through southern provinces like Binh Duong, Lam Dong, Khanh Hoa, Ninh Thuan, Binh Thuan and Ba Ria-Vung Tau across a total of 1,101 kilometers.
