Vietnamese tennis ace wins second int’l title in Mexico

Despite having to play the semifinal and final on the same day, Ly Hoang Nam went on to claim his second M15 Cancun Mexico title Sunday.

Due to bad weather conditions, Nam had to play the semifinal and final in one afternoon. It took him two hours to defeat French player Bittoun Kouzmine in two sets with the scores 6-2 and 7-5.

Right after, Nam entered the final with New Zealand’s Rubin Statham, formerly ranked 289th in the world. Statham had better serves thanks to his ideal height, but the 34-year-old could not keep up with Nam in the stamina race. After winning the first set 6-4, Nam continued to take advantage of his better stamina and won the second set with the same score.

After four hours and two games, Nam claimed his second consecutive M15 Cancun title without losing a set. He received $2,160 in prize money and with 20 points earned from the two titles, is set to climb to 519th in world rankings following next week’s update.

Another M15 Cancun will be held this week but Nam won’t participate. Instead, he will return to Vietnam to train and rest. The 24-year-old is set to compete in three Thai events in January 2022.

This is Nam’s fifth single’s title. His previous international wins occurred at Vietnam F5 Futures (September 2016), Thailand F3 Futures (June 2017), M15 Sharm El Sheikh in Egypt (October 2021) and M15 Cancun Mexico (November 2021).
