Vietnamese singer to compete in K-pop girl group survival show

Vu Linh Dan, the runner-up of the singing contest The Voice Kids of Vietnam, will compete in South Korean survival show Universe Ticket, which seeks talents for a new K-pop girl group.

Dan, 16, is set to be the only Vietnamese contestant on the reality show produced by broadcaster SBS.

“I’m ready to challenge myself on this show,” Dan said.

Musician Duong Khac Linh, who has been Dan’s mentor since the 2019 The Voice Kids of Vietnam, assisted her in completing the procedures and connecting with the show’s organizers.

To qualify as a contestant, the Vietnamese teen had to go through two interviews, online and in person. She received the result a week later.

“After four years, Dan has matured and her talent is glowing. The showbiz environment of South Korea is challenging and it will be difficult but I put my trust in Dan. This is an opportunity for her to learn and improve herself,” Linh said.

Dan said she would participate in the main activities of the show for filming in July before airing in November.

According to the organizers, the voting round for contestants will open on July 19. On social media and fan pages, fans are calling people to vote for Dan so the Vietnamese contestant can go further in the competition.

Dan, a Hanoi native, rose to fame after finishing as the runner-up of The Voice Kids of Vietnam in 2019. She impressed with her powerful and emotional vocals and can sing well in Vietnamese and English.

“Universe Ticket” has a similar format as other survival shows like “Boys Planet,” “Fantasy Boys” and “R U Next?”, which aim to find members for new K-pop groups.

The eight winning contestants of Universe Ticket will be formed into a K-pop girl group, operating under the management of F&F Entertainment in a 2.5-year deal.

On July 14, the organizers announced 41 contestants from all over the world and introduced the remaining 41 contestants three days later.
