Vietnamese mother, child drown in Thailand beach

Two Vietnamese women drowned in Thailand after they were swept away by strong waves while swimming at sea on Sunday.

The victims, aged 52 and 16, were a pair of mother and daughter from Hanoi. They and their family came to Phuket for a business meeting and also as a tourist trip, the Vietnam News Agency reported.

Le Trung Kien, an official in charge of citizen protection at the Vietnamese Embassy in Thailand, said the embassy is cooperating with the victims’ family and local authorities to bring their bodies back home and conduct other relevant procedures.

Suportn Muangkhai, a police investigator, said the incident was reported by rescuers of the Tambon Sakhu at around 7:15 a.m., the Bangkok Post reported. The two were swept away around 20 m from the shore of Naithon beach in Thalang District, he added.

Thai police said red flags were erected around the beach to warn people against entering the sea due to strong winds and rough seas. The two victims allegedly ignored the flags, police claimed.
