Vietnam U23 coach Gong Oh-kyun steps down

South Korea’s Gong Oh-kyun has abdicated as head coach of Vietnam U23 three months before the end of his contract.

The Vietnam Football Federation (VFF) confirmed Monday that both sides could not find a common voice during the negotiation process.

The 48-year-old South Korean bids farewell to Vietnam U23 after leading the squad to the quarterfinals the 2022 AFC U23 Asian Cup in Uzbekistan last June.

VFF and coach Gong had signed a one-year contract in March this year. Gong took over the team from Vietnam’s national team coach Park Hang-seo after the 2021 SEA Games 31.

In the recent U23 Asian Cup, Vietnam exited the tournament after losing 0-2 to Saudi Arabia in the quarterfinals. Before that, the team peaked second in group C by beating Malaysia and drawing against Thailand and South Korea.

Gong is credited with giving many young up-and-coming players – including defender Phan Tuan Tai and midfielder Khuat Van Khang – the chance to shine in international competition.

Gong is represented by the same company as coach Park. After leaving U23 Vietnam, it has been reported that he hopes to continue his career in Vietnamese football by entering negotiations with select V-League clubs.

With the early departure of both Gong and coach Park after the AFF Cup 2022, VFF may seek a coach who can lead both the national team and the U23 squadron.
