The Vietnam national basketball team will participate in the FIBA Asia Cup qualifiers with Thailand, Malaysia, Mongolia and Tahiti.
Vietnam have participated in FIBA Asia twice, in 1963 and 1965.
The strong development of Vietnamese basketball in recent years will see Vietnam again take part in the qualifiers for FIBA Asia Cup 2025.
Sixteen teams have directly qualified for the tournament and eight more will be chosen from the qualifiers.
The qualifiers consist of 18 teams and have two rounds, which will take place in May 2022 and January 2023.
In the first round of qualifiers, Vietnam (140th in world rankings) will face Tahiti (97th), Thailand (107th), Malaysia (121st) and Mongolia (unranked) in group D.
If Vietnam can make it to the second round, they will compete with the top three teams of group C. Four teams that have the best results after two rounds will qualify for the main event.
Established in 1960, FIBA Asia Cup is now a continental tournament with the participation of 24 teams in Asia and Oceania.
World number three Australia started competing in the tournament in 2017 and won the title that year.
In Southeast Asia, the Philippines, Indonesia and Thailand are the regular faces in the tournament.
