Vietnam’s Ministry of Public Security will start issuing passports with electronic chips beginning March 1.
The passports, to be issued by the Immigration Department under the ministry, will be a useful improvement for Vietnamese citizens as over 100 countries have already been using passports with chips, the department said.
There will not be many changes to the new passports compared to the ones currently in use, save for a symbol of a chip on the first cover page.
The actual chip will be located on the second cover page, storing personal and biometric information like fingerprints.
The inclusion of the chips will help improve security, making it difficult for information to be copied, forged or stolen, the immigration department said.
