A draw on Wednesday has brought Vietnam in group C with Thailand and Singapore in U23 AFF Cup 2022.
Group A has Brunei, the Philippines,Timor Leste and host Cambodia, while group B consists of Indonesia, Laos, Malaysia and Myanmar.
The matches will take place from Feb. 14 to 26 in Morodok Techo and Prince stadiums.
In the previous U23 AFF Cup, Vietnam were also grouped with Thailand. They took the top spot of the group but lost 0-1 to Indonesia in the semifinals then won 1-0 against Cambodia in the third-place playoff. For Thailand, they entered the final but lost 1-2 to Indonesia.
Coach Dinh The Nam is set to manage the team in U23 AFF Cup next year. This tournament is considered a preparation for SEA Games 31, to be hosted in Vietnam in May.
SEA Games 31 will be the last tournament of Park Hang-seo as the coach of U23 Vietnam. After that, he will only coach the national team and the U23 team are set to be managed by another South Korean coach.
Since Park took over the national team and U23 team in 2017, Vietnam have beaten Thailand twice, at King’s Cup and U23 AFC Championship qualifiers, along with three draws. The only defeat against Thailand was in AFF Cup this year when Vietnam lost 0-2 after two legs of the semifinals.
