Vietnam put SEA Games gold behind, focus on U23 Asian Cup

“Thailand have made many changes in players since SEA Games. So have Vietnam. Basically, we have put the SEA Games success behind us to focus on the next game,” Gong said in a press conference Wednesday.

“Thailand players are skilled and talented. Their players have high quality. They will also have new tactics so we will have to pay close attention.”

Gong admitted he was under great pressure when replacing coach Park Hang-seo at the U23 team, but is confident to overcome it.

Under the new coach, Vietnam will have major changes in formation and tactics.

“I learned a lot from coach Park and his tactics, to find the right game plan for U23 Vietnam. In general, the players have adapted well to the changes despite the short preparation time. I’m pleased that they followed the instructions of the coaching staff. I also participate in the training process to help the players adapt quicker,” Gong added.

U23 Asian Cup in Uzbekistan is a special tournament for Vietnam fans. In the 2018 edition, Vietnam, under coach Park’s lead, finished as runner-up, marking a successful period of Vietnamese football. Although this time Vietnam do not have as many stars as before, Gong believes they can achieve something.

“U23 Vietnam were really impressive back in 2018. Hopefully, we will also achieve good results. The current players are of high quality. They will improve and develop further and I will create the best condition for them to do that,” he said.

The U23 Asian Cup game between Vietnam and Thailand will take place on Thursday at 10 p.m. (Hanoi time) and will be reported live on VnExpress International.
