Vietnam players will mature after U23 Asian Cup: coach

Coach Gong Oh-kyun appreciates the dedication of Vietnam players despite losing 0-2 to Saudi Arabia in the U23 Asian Cup quarterfinals on Sunday night.

“First of all, I would like to congratulate Saudi Arabia on making it to the semifinals,” Gong said after the match in Uzbekistan’s Lokomotiv Stadium. “This is my first tournament here and I’m extremely grateful to the players. I really want to thank them.”

Going up against a much stronger Saudi Arabia, Vietnam had a great start in the first half as they created many scoring chances. However, Vietnam couldn’t convert them into goals while Saudi Arabia scored two and won 2-0.

“We have prepared to face a strong opponent and showed our determination to not give up. Thanks to the players who fought and gave their best. I’m sure that my players will be more mature in the next year or two,” Gong said.

Besides conceding two goals, Vietnam had also played with 10 men since the 77th minute when keeper Quan Van Chuan received a red card. But even during that situation, Gong still kept his cool.

“When Saudi Arabia were leading 2-0, I still stayed calm. I told the players to not give up and try their best. And indeed, they had a good fight. I’m sorry that Vietnam couldn’t play this game better. I hope the players will quickly forget about this defeat and continue their great form at the club level, for a better future,” Gong said.
