Vietnam need to forget Myanmar win: head coach

National women’s football head coach Mai Duc Chung wants Vietnam to forget their last win against Myanmar when the two teams meet again in SEA Games finals next week.

Vietnam had a big 4-0 victory against host Cambodia in the semifinals of SEA Games 32 women’s football at Olympic Stadium on Friday night, while Myanmar also advanced with a 4-2 comeback win against Thailand.

Vietnam previously defeated Myanmar 3-1 in the group stage.

Chung said playing Myanmar in the final could be either an advantage or disadvantage depending on how one looks at it.

“We need to forget the win against Myanmar in the group stage to focus on the final,” Chung said in the post-match interview. “Both teams know each other well, so it’s 50-50 this game.”

Chung said he was happy because Vietnam advanced to the final. He said it had not been easy.

“We respect Cambodia. They have improved a lot. We had to try hard to earn this victory. It’s a good sign that teams in the region are improving,” he said.

In the last three encounters with Vietnam, Cambodia conceded 20 goals but couldn’t score any.

The level gap was shown in the SEA Games semifinals when Vietnam led by three goals after the first half, despite not using their strongest lineup. In the second half, the team played slower and didn’t attack much, but still tallied another goal in the last minute thanks to a Huynh Nhu penalty.

The final between Vietnam and Myanmar will take place on May 15.
