Vietnam English proficiency no longer ‘low’

Vietnam has moved up five places from last year and out of the low proficiency group in a ranking done by a Swiss language training company.

Scoring 502 out of 800, Vietnam ranks 60th out of 111 non-native English speaking countries and territories in Education First’s EF English Proficiency Index (EPI).

The score places it in the moderate proficiency group along with 28 others.

It had scored 486 last year.

Out of 24 Asian countries and territories in the list, Vietnam is seventh, up from 12th.

Singapore leads the continent and at 642 is the only Asian nation in the “very high proficiency” category.

The Philippines and Hong Kong are in the “high-proficiency” group.

Asia’s average declined slightly due to lower scores by China and the Philippines. Most countries surveyed improved somewhat.

Globally, the Netherlands maintains its top position followed by Singapore, Austria, Norway, and Denmark.

The ranking is based on the EF Standard English Test, an online, adaptive English test of reading and listening skills to classify language abilities into one of six levels established by the Common European Framework of Reference.

The test is available online for free.
