Nguyen Tien Minh, Vietnam’s number one badminton player, will break the world record for most appearances at the World Badminton Championships later this month.
Minh’s inclusion in the Badminton World Federation (BWF)’s list of players eligible to participate in the 2022 BWF World Championships in Tokyo, Japan, makes it the 13th time he will compete in the tournament.
After making his world championship debut in 2005, Minh participated in 2006, 2007, 2009, 2010, 2011, 2013, 2014, 2015, 2018, 2019 and 2021 editions. His best result in the world championships is a bronze medal in 2013.
This has made Minh, 39, the player with the highest number of appearances in the history of BWF World Championships, surpassing previous record holder Lin Dan. The Chinese badminton legend, also 39, competed in the tournament 12 times, winning the men’s singles title a record five times in 2006, 2007, 2009, 2011 and 2013.
Malaysian legend Lee Chong Wei has contested 11 times and reached the finals four times without winning the title. Lee is a year older than Minh. Lin and Lee retired from the game in 2019 and 2020, respectively, but Minh has remained active.
The 2022 BWF World Championship will take place August 22-28 in a knockout format. The tournament is one of the most prestigious in the sport with the winner crowned the world badminton champion. Minh is the oldest player in the men’s singles event this year.
