Vietnam Airlines flight attendants set free amid drug investigation

Four Vietnam Airlines flight attendants, who brought 11.4 kg of drugs from France to HCMC, were set free from custody but must still assist with the investigation.

The attendants: Nguyen Thanh Thuy, Vo Tu Quynh, Tran Thi Thu Ngan and Dang Phuong Van have been released on bail, a source told VnExpress on Wednesday.

They were set free after two suspects were detained for their involvement in the drug investigation.

An initial investigation said the attendant did not know that 157 out of the 327 tubes they carried contained drugs. “There is not enough evidence for a criminal charge,” authorities said.

HCMC police is investigating for a potential drug trafficking charge.

On Mar. 16, a security check at the Tan Son Nhat Airport in HCMC found 11.4 kg of drugs within a package of toothpaste tubes in the carry-on luggage of the four women in question. The attendants flew on the VN10 flight from France to Vietnam.

They told the police that they had agreed to bring the package of toothpaste tubes, weighing 60 kilograms in total, on the request of a person in France made via another Vietnam Airlines employee.

The four attendants said they were paid VND10 million (US$422) to bring the goods back to Vietnam in their hand luggage . All four worked that flight as employees of the airline.

The four attendants were detained shortly after they touched down in HCMC.
