US CDC urges Americans against travel to Vietnam

The U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention has urged Americans to avoid traveling to Vietnam because of high counts of Covid.

On Monday, the agency added Vietnam to the Level 4 category, the highest travel health notice tier, with a ‘very high’ Covid risk along with more than 140 other countries and territories.

The CDC places a destination at Level 4 when more than 500 cases per 100,000 residents are registered in the preceding 28 days.

“Avoid travel to these destinations. If you must travel to these destinations, make sure you are fully vaccinated before travel,” CDC wrote on its website.

Vietnam was previously listed at Level 3, deemed high risk.

Vietnam has been recording a surge in daily Covid cases since after the Lunar New Year holiday. On Monday, the country recorded over 122,000 cases, with the average daily count over the past week at 74,773.

Since the pandemic broke out in the country in early 2020, Vietnam has confirmed over 3.37 million infections.

Vietnam has resumed commercial flights to 20 of 28 countries and territories that it operated direct flights to before the pandemic, including the U.S. (San Francisco).

From March 15, Vietnam will fully reopen inbound and outbound tourism.
