A penalty helped U23 Vietnam draw 1-1 against U20 South Korea in an exhibition football game on Tuesday night.
The game, hosted in Viet Tri Stadium in the northern Phu Tho Province, was a chance for Vietnam head coach Park Hang-seo to test different positions in the formation and there were 21 players used in the game.
The youngest player in the squad, 18-year-old Nguyen Duc Viet, played 77 minutes and had a few key passes, while the second-youngest player, 19-year-old Bui Vi Hao, brought Vietnam a penalty in the 17th minute when he was fouled inside the box. On the penalty spot, captain Dang Van Toi finished into the left corner to equalize for Vietnam.
Three minutes before that, South Korea opened the score from a set piece. From a corner, captain Bae Jun-ho crossed it in and forward Lee Young Jun had a close-range header. Although keeper Nguyen Van Toan managed to reach the ball, he couldn’t save it.
Besides the two goals, both teams didn’t create many scoring chances and settled for a draw.
After the game, Vietnam head coach Park Hang-seo was happy with the team’s performance, saying the players had tried their best to follow his instruction.
“I needed to test the players’ ability in this game. I had a good impression of the new players. I think this is an important game,” Park said.
The two teams will play another friendly in Hanoi on April 22. After that, they will keep training to prepare for SEA Games 31 in May.
