Authorities in the central province of Quang Binh are offering free expedition tours to Son Doong, the world’s largest cave, to the two most outstanding athletes at SEA Games.
Nguyen Ngoc Quy, director of the provincial Department of Tourism, said this was part of its efforts to promote Son Doong’s international image on the occasion of Southeast Asia’s largest sports event being hosted in northern Vietnam.
A four-day-three-night expedition to Son Doong that costs VND69.8 million (around $3,000) allows one to traverse unique underground rainforests, wade through rivers both above and underground and scale the 90-meter wall at the end of the cave, dubbed “Great Wall of Vietnam” with ropes and ladders.
Provincial authorities also offered three-day Quang Binh tours to 50 international reporters who cover the SEA Games.
In addition, local travel firm Netin Travel also offers free tours to Cha Loi Cave for coaches and athletes who win gold medals in karate at this year’s event.
The 31st SEA Games, a biennial regional multi-sport event, is being held in Hanoi and several northern provinces.
As of Wednesday, the Vietnamese team won 22 medals, including seven golds.
Son Doong opened to tourists in 2013 with a five-kilometer-long system, 150 meters high and 200 meters wide, containing at least 150 individual caves, a dense subterranean jungle and several underground rivers.
