Tuna export value up 55% as major markets buy more

Vietnam earned US$730 million from tuna exports in the first eight months of this year, up 55%, according to the General Department of Vietnam Customs.

In August alone, tuna exports were worth US$92 million, a year-on-year surge of 86%. Shipments to major markets including the U.S., the EU, Canada, Japan, Saudi Arabia and Thailand increased sharply last month.

To date, Vietnam has exported tuna to 97 foreign countries and territories, accounting for some 10% of its total seafood export turnover.

The Vietnam Association of Seafood Exporters and Producers (VASEP) predicts tuna export will continue to increase further in the last four months of this year, mainly due to local seafood’s competitive prices.

The U.S. and the EU are seeing high inflation rates, so their demand for cheap canned tuna is on the rise, seafood exporters say.

Vietnam’s tuna export turnover is expected to reach US$1.1 billion this year, up 45% over 2021, the association estimates.
