Thousands bade farewell to mortal remains of Thich Nhat Hanh

Thousands of monks, nuns and citizens gathered Saturday at the Tu Hieu Pagoda to bid their final respects adieu to Thich Nhat Hanh.

The monks, nuns and lay people packed the pagoda from early in the morning to say their final goodbyes before a tea ceremony (cremation) was held at Eternal Park of Hue Garden of Eden.

Before his coffin was moved out of the pagoda, representatives of Plum Village and Tu Hieu Pagoda recalled the life of the Zen Master and thanked the monks, agencies and individuals who attended the funeral rituals after his passing last week.

Thich Nhat Hanh’s funeral lasted seven days as a silent meditation course.

Around 7:30 a.m., the coffin of Thich Nhat Hanh was moved from the pagoda. A long line of monks, nuns and people followed slowly. The distance from Tu Hieu Pagoda to the cremation site is about 8 km and everyone walked the last two km.

After his cremation, his remains will rest at the Tu Hieu Pagoda and other Plum Villages of the world.

The Zen Master, one of the world’s most influential Buddhist figures, passed away at the Tu Hieu Temple in his birthplace of Hue on January 22, aged 95.
