Construction of Tan Son Nhat International Airport’s third terminal and an accompanying road, costing nearly VND16 trillion ($678.3 million), began on Saturday.
The project, expected to be completed in two years, will enable the Saigon airport, the largest in Vietnam, to receive 50 million visitors a year and will relieve congestion around the airport and adjoining areas.
The airport’s third terminal, costing around VND11 trillion derived from the budget of the Airports Corporation of Vietnam, will have a capacity of 20 million visitors a year. Its chosen design has curved roofs, as well as green architecture that ensures guests can conveniently access malls and other facilities.
The project to construct the terminal was approved for investment two years ago. Construction was supposed to begin in 2021, but was delayed due to issues regarding land clearance and land purpose conversion.
In addition to the third terminal, the Tran Quoc Hoan-Cong Hoa Road, spanning 4 km, will also be constructed with an investment cost at around VND4.8 trillion. The road begins at the Tran Quoc Hoan-Phan Thuc Duyen intersection and ends at the C12-Cong Hoa-Truong Chinh intersection. Its main route, 25-48 m wide, has four lanes; there are also two branches of the road, each with 3-4 lanes.
The road is expected to be completed in August 2024, and will connect with Tan Son Nhat International Airport’s third terminal and relieve congestion outside the airport.
The Tan Son Nhat International Airport had a planned capacity of 25 million visitors a year by 2020, but since 2017, the number of visitors had already reached 40 million, overloading the airport, especially during the busy Tet holiday, which is coming in three weeks.
