Thailand dominate weightlifting

HÀ NỘI  — Thailand’s Duangaksorn Chaidee successfully dominated the women’s over-71kg class, winning gold for her total 279kg lift – 27kg clear of the runner-up, Nurul Akmal of Indonesia, on May 22.

Indonesian lifter Muhammad Zul Ilmi earned a gold medal in the men’s under-89kg class power-lifting, after lifting a total of 337kg.

He beat Vietnamese Bùi Anh Tuấn, who finished the competition with a total of 334kg for silver, and Thailand’s Phacharamethi Tharaphan, in third for bronze with 325kg in total.

Vietnamese Nguyễn Thị Kim Vân ranked third in the table with her total result of 251kg.

Thailand’s Rungsuriya Panya did his best in the men’s over 89kg class when he finished first for the gold medal with 349kg, just one kilo heavier than Vietnamese Nguyễn Quang Minh, in second for silver with 348kg.

The bronze medal went to Muhammad Hafiz Shamsuddin, who lifted a total 342kg.

Thailand took the lead in the medal table of weightlifting at the SEA Games after bagging six golds, including two SEA Games records in the women’s 49kg class by Surodchana Khambao (195kg total lift) and the women’s 45kg by Thanyathon Sukcharoen (total lift 174kg).

Việt Nam and Indonesia won three golds each.

Vietnamese Lại Gia Thanh also set a new SEA Games record in the men’s 55kg with a total lift of 268kg. VNS
